History of Fetovaia Beach

The beach of Fetovaia, located on the Island of Elba in Tuscany, Italy, has a fascinating history. While I don’t have specific information about the detailed history of the beach, I can provide you with some general information about the region.

The Island of Elba is known for its rich history and natural beauty. Over the centuries, the island has been inhabited by different civilizations, including the Etruscans, Romans, and Pisans. However, it was during the medieval period that the island gained strategic importance due to its location in the Mediterranean Sea.

In the 16th century, the island was invaded by pirates and later came under the control of the Republic of Genoa. However, in 1814, the island became famous as the place of exile for Napoleon Bonaparte, who was sent there after his abdication as the Emperor of France.

Napoleon’s presence on the island brought a significant increase in tourism and international attention to the region. Since then, the Island of Elba has been a popular destination for visitors looking to enjoy its beautiful beaches, stunning landscapes, and rich history.

1-Beautiful but crowded:

The beach is wonderful, unfortunately very crowded, especially in the free area, due to the crazy prices of umbrellas and sunbeds, especially from the bathhouse with brown umbrellas (I don’t know the name, but prices around 70/80 €). The beach is surrounded by pine forests, crystal-clear water, especially on the east side (looking at the sea), also suitable for children because it’s not too deep. The bar in the center of the beach has normal prices for a sandwich and a drink, the restaurants are very expensive and semi-empty, to be avoided.

2-Beautiful, but there’s room for improvement:

I’m returning to Fetovaia for the third time, more out of nostalgia than necessity. I empathize with those who say, ‘flag planted!’ It’s too crowded, too chaotic, parking is expensive and hard to find. The equipped beach is also quite pricey.

Fortunately for us, we managed to find parking plus two sunbeds and an umbrella for 40 euros. We chose to accept it because we knew otherwise we’d have to give up a splendid day of relaxation.

But, as they say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I love the island, and for me, it’s all splendid, not just Fetovaia.

3-Beautiful beach. Too bad about the presence of seaweed:

Gorgeous beach, considered by many as the best on the island. Unfortunately, our experience, and consequently our judgment, was influenced by the presence of a lot of seaweed, both on the shore and in the first ten to twenty meters of the sea. Like much of the island, the free beach is not very extensive. However, there are bathing establishments, but their prices are not very economical. On the other hand, self-service and the bar have fair prices. We will try to go back next time, hoping not to find seaweed again.

4-Beautiful but very crowded:

Crystal-clear water, but a chaotic beach! Parking is paid, they ask for 12 euros for just the morning or just the afternoon, and 20 for the entire day. As always, I spend nothing and park on a curve before Fetovaia coming from Chiessi, then I walk on a beautiful trail that silently leads to the beach in 20 minutes.

5-Spectacular beach, but exaggerated prices:

On our last day in Elba, we decided to visit this famous beach: there’s nothing to say about the beauty of the landscape, sand, and sea. It’s definitely worth it! I recommend paying a visit. HOWEVER, keep in mind that there are two establishments; one was full by 10 in the morning, and the other asked us a whopping 46€ for 2 sunbeds and an umbrella (5th row) + 10 euros as a deposit for the shower key. Definitely too much compared to the average in Elba. Parking is also quite expensive (12€, 20€ depending on availability), and the road to get there is a bit rough, steep, and full of potholes. On the other hand, the prices of the two bars for eating or getting drinks seemed average for the island. With a beautiful sunny day and favorable wind, we enjoyed it a lot, but it’s indeed too expensive. Of course, in August, there were also a lot of people, so you have to go early if you want to find a spot.

6-Beautiful, but:

In the context of Elba, it’s a very beautiful beach but too chaotic during the summer months of peak tourism. The water is disturbed in some areas by the seagrass along the shore and in others by the excessive number of bathers. A sore point is the exaggerated parking fees throughout Elba: 20 euros in Cavoli, 15 in Fetovaia, 14 in Capo Bianco, and so on. For those fortunate enough to stay for 15 days, it almost feels like taking out a loan to park? If only the roads were decent, but instead, they are smooth and full of potholes, just like 15 years ago.

7-Beautiful beach.

A very beautiful beach with fine sand.
Crystal-clear sea.
The only downside is the paid parking.
If you stop at the first one you encounter, it’s 20 euros for the whole day and 12 for half a day… absurd!
If you go all the way to the beach, there’s another spacious parking lot at 16 euros per day and 8 for half a day… more affordable. Of course, you can’t leave the car on the road.
The beach is definitely worth a visit.

8-Beautiful beach but discomfort for tourists:

We arrived, and unfortunately, parking was not available like in all the beaches on the island. If you park along the road, a €30.00 fine is guaranteed. We met a man in the parking lot who offered us 35 euros for the whole day, including parking, an umbrella, and two sunbeds. We didn’t even haggle; we settled with a proper receipt. The sea, three years ago, was much cleaner and more transparent. That day, it was green and felt like being on the Riviera. Unfortunately, it wasn’t clean at all, with a lot of litter due to uncivilized people. Additionally, the showers are paid, 0.50 euros for cold water, and 1 euro for hot water. You can’t even take a shower without being asked for money, for goodness’ sake.

9-Beautiful, beautiful:

Lovely beach…visited on a slightly windy day, so the water near the shore wasn’t perfectly clear. However, just a few meters out, and it’s a spectacle. You should know that as soon as you park, guys in red polo shirts guide you with a receipt already prepared for you, toward their section of sunbeds and umbrellas, which are not from the adjacent establishment. Perhaps with a price saving of 30 euros, but then it turns out to be a cluster of closely placed sunbeds and umbrellas, with limited room to move. Next time, I’ll definitely choose a beach establishment. The important thing is to know, then one decides.

10-Crystal-clear water:

The water is super clear; the free beach is small, and I dare not imagine the chaos that can occur in August. In June, however, if you encounter windy days, it’s not even worth visiting because it loses a lot of its beauty; it’s simply not worth it (that’s why the recent June reviews are not very positive; I also experienced a ‘bad day,’ but a few days later, with calm seas, I tried again). I recommend approaching it by sea, perhaps through an excursion organized by a local company, to enjoy the water, take a swim, and avoid the crowds on the beach. The paid parking is a bit expensive, 20€ for the whole day, 12€ for half a day. There is a small free parking nearby, but by 10 a.m. (in June and with ‘iffy weather’), it was already full. It’s worth going a little further and parking on the left in a ‘lucky’ free parking space, and then walking down the whole descent. Of course, this option is not very suitable for those with small children, strollers, etc.
